Bandwidth Saver

Save your bandwidth. Vonage allows you to adjust it when you need to.

By adjusting your Vonage sound quality to the very efficient 30 kbps (kilobits per second) "normal" level, you can still maintain excellent sound quality while saving bandwidth. Don't worry, things won't sound any different.

We'll show you how.

What is Bandwidth Saver?

Vonage's Bandwidth Saver feature allows you to modify the sound quality of your call slightly to save valuable bandwidth. Some consumers with 128 Kbps upload connections may have poor quality due to ISP (Internet Service Provider) problems while using Vonage. By selecting a lower quality setting, this problem can be avoided.

How do I use Bandwidth Saver?

  1. Enter your user name and password at the top right of the page to log in to your Vonage Online Account.
  2. Click Features and scroll to the Bandwidth Saver section.
  3. Select the phone number you want the Bandwidth Saver to apply to and click Configure.
  4. Select the white circle on the left-hand side under "30 Kilobits per second (Kbps)" (or the Kbps setting of choice) and click Submit.

What is Bandwidth?

Bandwidth is defined as the ability to transfer data (such as a Vonage phone call) from one point to another in a fixed amount of time. The higher the bandwidth, the more data or information you can send over your Internet connection. There are two types of bandwidth at your location: upload and download. Uploading is when you send data from your location to the Internet, and downloading is when you receive data from the Internet.

What's the difference between high, medium and normal sound quality?

Many people can barely tell the difference between high, medium, and normal sound quality. High bandwidth is the default setting and has the highest bandwidth. If bandwidth is not an issue for you, we suggest you use this setting. Normal bandwidth is the lowest bandwidth setting. This setting saves bandwidth and still provides excellent call quality.

Does the Bandwidth Saver feature take effect immediately?

The Bandwidth Saver feature does not always take effect right away. If you want the changes to begin immediately, you can reboot the phone adapter. Click here for directions on rebooting your phone adapter.
