SMS service disruption update
May 8, 2026
A fire at a data center belonging to one of our partners resulted in a total loss of connectivity for the infrastructure hosted at that location, impacting some of our messaging services. Our monitoring systems alerted us to the issue, and we responded immediately to restore service for our customers. The incident affected our SMS dependent services for customers sending or receiving messages outside of the U.S.
What Happened
Our monitoring systems first alerted us to the issue — a fire at one of our third-party cloud provider sites — in the early morning hours on Thursday. The data center fire led to a Vonage service interruption within the platform components responsible for carrier and supplier integration, which impacted our SMS-related services regionally. A subset of our customers in Europe and the Middle East may have experienced delivery issues across SMS API, Messages API, and Verify API.
What We Did
The vast majority of impacted customers had service restored within several hours as we rerouted them to an alternate data center. We are in the process of migrating our SMS service providers and the remaining 0.5% of impacted customers with specific requirements to another data center. We will continue to keep customers updated directly.
We recognize how critical our solutions are to our customers and we are committed to being your most trusted and reliable partner. Thank you to our customers for your patience and understanding during this incident. We are grateful that everyone at the data center is safe.
