Fraud Defender

The Vonage Fraud Defender feature is integrated within Vonage Verify API and works with Voice API, SMS API, and Messages API. It’s easy to set up and provides real-time monitoring, alerting, and blocking based on the rules and controls you put in place via the Vonage dashboard.

Number Insight API

Number Insight API helps you identify and authenticate callers based on their intent. It evaluates global phone numbers for assessment and database cleaning, triggering step-up authentication if necessary.

What Is SMS Verification?

SMS verification is a security process that confirms a user’s identity by sending a unique code to their mobile phone number via text message. This is known as a one-time password (OTP), generated whenever the user attempts to log in to an account or purchase online.

The user must input this code into the relevant field to complete the login or transaction. What is an SMS verification code? It’s typically a numerical sequence of four or six digits, although other formats exist.

This extra verification step helps ensure that the user is the legitimate owner of that number, adding an additional layer of security against hackers. Any login or transaction requires more than just a username and password.

How Does SMS Text Verification Work?

  1. When a user signs up for an account with a business or organization, they will be asked for their mobile phone number as well as setting up a username and password.

    2. The user tries to log into the app or website with their username and password. If those details are correct, the system generates an SMS verification code and sends it to the number associated with that account.

    3. Once the message arrives, the user is prompted to type the code into the app or website to complete the login process. The code is usually valid for a few minutes.

    4. The code tells the server that the user is legitimate and access is granted. It’s the same deal if the user wants to purchase from the website or app.

Pros of SMS Verification

According to research by Google Cloud, credential issues (such as weak passwords or using the same password for everything) make up more than 60% of the compromise factors that lead to “incidents” like hacks and data breaches.

The main advantage of SMS verification is that it adds an extra layer of protection against such issues. It’s safer than only using a password to log into a banking app or ecommerce website.

With SMS verification, a hacker can only access someone’s account if they have physical access to their phone. And if they’ve stolen the phone, they’ll need the username and password for the account. That’s why such processes are known as two-factor authentication (2FA).

Another benefit is that text verification is convenient and user-friendly. Most people are familiar with the process. The number of mobile devices worldwide is set to reach 18.22 billion by 2025, and almost all can receive SMS messages—not just smartphones.

SMS verify services protect businesses and customers alike. Companies can guard against fraud, while end-users know the business is professional and committed to security. Plus, the technology is inexpensive, with no need to install apps or hardware.

These benefits are apparent in the success of SMS verification for Vinted, the online vintage retailer. Vinted was experiencing an increase in fraudulent transactions and needed a convenient and customer-friendly method of user authentication. With Vonage Verify API, they can implement the verification process only if the system flags suspicious behaviors during a transaction.

Cons of SMS Verification

SMS verification has many advantages, but there are a few downsides as well. For example, it’s not 100 percent secure. Text messages aren’t end-to-end encrypted, and third parties might read them. The practice of SIM swapping can also compromise a user’s account.

This is a problem now that many people receive SMS messages on multiple synced devices (such as smartwatches and computers alongside cell phones). This makes it easier for would-be hackers to intercept the verification code.

Lost and stolen phones also present a security threat, while some users might not be willing to supply their mobile phone number to a business for verification. The process only works if there’s a strong cell signal, and businesses incur costs for sending an SMS for each login request.

You can get around this with alternative authentication methods, such as WhatsApp, email, Silent Authentication, and text-to-speech (TTS). Vonage Verify API offers them all.

Who Uses SMS Verification?

There are all sorts of businesses and industries that use text verification services. They’re popular with companies that regularly handle sensitive information, such as financial services and healthcare, and any business selling goods or services online.

Social media networks and email providers often use SMS verification when users log into their accounts. Hospitality and transport companies use it to verify and confirm bookings, while utility providers such as telcos and energy firms authenticate users for billing purposes and authorizing service changes.

Across all industries, SMS verification is used for tasks like account registration and recovery, password resets, confirming high-value transactions, or confirming orders and deliveries.

How To Choose Your Mobile SMS Verification Service

Here’s what to look for if your organization is choosing an SMS code verification service:

  • Security: This is paramount since the whole concept of text verification is to protect confidential information. Make sure you pick a reputable verification service that’s SOC2 compliant to reduce the risk of hackers intercepting the codes you send.

  • Speed and Reliability: Fast, dependable message delivery is also crucial. Remember, users only have a few minutes to input the code before it expires. Ask if your SMS service provider has any fallback methods in the event of delivery failure.

  • Scalability: A large or growing enterprise with an extensive customer base must send out thousands of verification codes daily. Look for a service capable of handling large-scale message delivery without forfeiting speed.

  • Support: Even with a trustworthy service provider, you could still experience IT issues. It is important to choose a vendor that offers robust customer support whenever you need it.

SMS Verification Services and More as Part of Vonage Protection Suite

SMS verification is one way to shield your business against rising fraud attacks, but you can go a step further by combining it with the other tools in the Vonage Protection Suite — including Fraud Defender and Number Insight API.

Vonage Verify API offers multiple authentication channels, including email, voice (in multiple languages), or WhatsApp. Silent Authentication verifies user identities through their mobile network operators and smartphone data connection.

If an SMS passcode doesn’t go through, the intelligent failover feature automatically resends it via voice (TTS) through one API request. Your business can tailor the failover sequence to other channels and generate and manage its own PINs.

With these tools and more, it’s easy to ensure your customers are genuine and help them protect their accounts.

SMS Verification Services FAQs

When someone tries to log into their account or make an online purchase, the SMS verification service API sends a unique one-time passcode to the cell phone number they provided at signup. The user enters the code into the required field to confirm that they own the account.

SMS verification gives you an extra layer of security over and above just using passwords. However, it has a few vulnerabilities, such as the lack of end-to-end encryption. There have been phishing attacks on the verification codes while receiving SMS codes on synced devices, which raises the risk of interception.

Vonage Verify API allows authentication via email, voice, WhatsApp, Silent Authentication, and SMS. Vonage Protection Suite includes the Fraud Defender alerting and blocking solution, Number Insight API to identify and validate phone numbers, and Management APIs for reporting and analytics.

Vonage API pricing is designed to be affordable and understandable. You can choose a pricing model that suits your business, but you’ll only ever be charged for successful verifications (alongside messaging and voice rates).
