Transforming Ourselves at AWS re:Invent

The annual AWS re:Invent event is a learning conference hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the global cloud computing community, providing the tech community with an opportunity to connect, collaborate and learn about the AWS portfolio. The event features more than 2,000 technical sessions with thought leaders from throughout the tech industry.

This year’s AWS re:Invent sessions included a presentation from Vonage Senior Director of Software Engineering Matthew Krokosz and Nehar Arora, Staff Software Engineer. As a customer case study, Matt & Nehar discussed Vonage’s implementation of AWS products and services to modernize its real-time communication infrastructure.

At Vonage, we continue to evolve and grow to meet the market’s changing needs and to remain on the cutting edge of technological advancements. We are leveraging the scalability and flexibility of AWS to build a highly elastic and dynamic platform on which our business operates. With AWS, we are investing in our future by creating a cloud-native platform that will meet our needs - and the needs of our customers- today and tomorrow.

At a certain point in Vonage’s history, we recognized we needed to transform our infrastructure into a true cloud-native platform to keep up with our future endeavors, as well as the needs of our customers. That’s when we decided it was time to upgrade - not just upgrade an application or a tool but to upgrade the platform as a whole and bring it to the Cloud. This is where the journey also became a cultural shift for Vonage. Not only would we be upgrading our platform, we would also be up-skilling our teams, enhancing our processes and most importantly, creating better business outcomes for our customers.

Taking the leap on this journey first involved seeing the big picture of where we wanted to be. Within 2 years, we had re-designed our platform and successfully migrated our customer base to this new platform. We made a heavy investment in automation, we chose to fail fast so that we could make pivots early which we did many times. And AWS was with us every step of the way.

Matt pointed out that this kind of rapid pivot is in fact the culture that Vonage itself was founded upon more than 15 years ago. Time and again, we go back to our roots and transform ourselves, ensuring we are helping our customers to transform how they do business.
